Sea Island Cotton

Bawden Environmental Park

An environmentally sustainable cottage industry

The ladies meet every Saturday morning in our visitor reception centre.  They exchange skills, technical advice, jokes and stories over their work, their voices and laughter mingling with the joyful clack-clack-clack of the looms.  They have recently completed a training demonstration video, which is available for visitors' viewing at Bawdens.

The cotton scarves, handbags, washcloths, booties, hats and other items produced at Bawdens can be bought on-site, or ordered directly.  Please contact us for more information.

We initiated our organic sea island cotton project in 1999. Our intent was to support a local cottage industry by giving women in the area a chance to create and manage their own small business.  Thanks to generous support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Bawden cotton group has been able to purchase simple cotton processing equipment and has learned how to spin, weave, crochet and knit our organic sea island cotton into attractive, value-added end products.
